Personality: As yet little of the Elder’s
personality has been revealed. He appears to mourn the lost glories
of his people, and is determined to oppose the forces of Apocalypse
Personal Interests: Unrevealed.
History: Very
little is known for certain about the being known as the Elder,
and much of what follows is hearsay and speculation. He is apparently
the last survivor of a race of superhumans called the Knights of
Adrastraea. At some point during Earth’s ancient past, the
Knights clashed with the mutant Apocalypse, and in the devastating
war that followed the entire race was destroyed, although Apocalypse
was defeated. Why the Elder was not killed along with his people
has not been revealed.
The Knights knew that they faced extinction and before the battle
subjected some humans to a process that implanted ‘sleeper
DNA’ which contained the Knight’s own powers into their
bodies. The power would lie dormant perhaps over many thousands
of years, activating when Apocalypse or his agents returned. In
this way, the Knights believed that their legacy would continue
and would always oppose Apocalypse if they were not successful in
destroying him.
The Elder has apparently spent much of human history wandering the
earth, finding and instructing these mutants whose powers stem from
the Knights of Adrastraea. However in modern times, the influence
of Apocalypse has increased to the extent that it is dangerous for
the Elder to leave the sanctuary of the near deserted Hidden City
and he relies increasingly on Pilgrim to be his agent in the outside
world. The Elder was responsible for sending Pilgrim to instruct
Carrie Conway a.k.a. Spitfire in the use of her powers. The Elder
seems to be trying to persuade as many of the Knights heirs to return
to the Hidden City. How successful he has been in this aim has not
yet been revealed.
