First Appearance: (In regular continuity) X-Men (first series) #1, (In the Next-X Universe) Neo-X #10 "Genosha".
Origin: Long before he learned of his mutant powers, the charismatic subversive now known as Magneto felt the bitter sting of discrimination. He spent his youth interred at the Nazi death camp in Auschwitz, Poland, and was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust. To Magnus, this experience bluntly and irrevocably demonstrated the potential for inhumanity of an intolerant majority. After World War II, Magnus married Magda, a Gypsy girl he had rescued from Auschwitz. Their first child, Anya, was born several years later. When a mob prevented the couple from rescuing their young daughter from a fire, Magnus lashed out with his fledgling mutant abilities. In a white-hot moment of rage and pain, he killed his attackers and several onlookers. A terrified Magda fled, never having revealed that she was pregnant.

Known Superhuman Powers: As one of earth’s most physically powerful mutants, Magneto had control over all forms of magnetism, and could even generate elictro-static bolts of energy. By manipulating magnetic fields he could fly, and project force shields for protection. He is one of the few mutants who could single-handedly fight all of the X-Men to a standstill. However, his mutant powers were stripped from him forever after he was infected by a hybrid version of the Techno/Legacy virus. The virus ate its way through the X-Factor gene in his body and nearly killed the man in the process. Quick thinking from Anodyne and Valence of Neo-X eliminated the virus from Magnus’ body, but the X-Factor was completely destroyed, and thus eliminated Magneto’s power. For all practical purposes, Magneto is dead, however the man, the human, Erik Magnus Lehnsherr survived the ordeal.
Abilities/Special Skills: Magnus is an expert in genetic manipulation and has mastered many technological fields as well.
Weapons Used: None, however on occasionally, Magneto has employed magnetically powered devices of his own design, such as a machine capable of inducing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from afar.
Personality: Magnus is a text book megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur which have been thankfully tempered by age and a culmination of wisdom that time has brought. He is quick-tempered and demanding, yet totally devoted to his family and the population of Genosha.
Personal Interests: Genosha and maintaining a sovereign state for all of mutantity is his primary interest in life. All else is secondary, with the exception of his love for Lorna and their daughter Tess.
Next-X History:
As the self-appointed Master of Magnetism, Magneto set about trying to become the ruler of the world. His primary goal was to usher in the golden age of Homo Sapien Superior. He was met with frustration and defeat at every turn - usually at the hands of Charles Xavier and his X-Men. At one point, holding the planet hostage with its own magnetic field, Magneto demanded a homeland where mutants could govern themselves. Ultimately, the United Nations conceded. Members hoped that by granting Magneto sovereignty over the African island of Genosha, where humans once enslaved mutants, he would withdraw from the world stage. Magneto managed to rebuild much of the war-torn country, elevating mutants to positions of power within the government and restricting the liberties of humans. It is now the jewel of the Ivory coast.
