Next-X History: Little is known of V.R’s early life, or how he and his lover Lynn came to be members of the Diablo gang. It is probable that they were petty criminals who fell in with the gang due to a combination of alienation from society and as protection from the authorities through strength in numbers. Their mutant abilities made them useful to the Diablos and they were at the forefront of the gang’s attack on a number of American cities. By the time they attacked Detroit, they were considered reliable and established members of the gang. However in the aftermath of the Detroit attack, and the looting and chaos that followed, both V.R and Lynn felt disillusioned with the group and were beginning to believe that they had made a mistake in joining.
They were afraid to leave however, until a team of government agents, the first incarnation of the Wildcards, infiltrated the Diablos. V.R and Lynn switched sides and helped the Wildcards’ leader Ace to escape with his life, and assisted in capturing several leading Diablos. V.R himself captured Fabian Cortez, the secret leader of the group. With the power of the Diablos broken, V.R and Lynn were offered a pardon for their crimes, on the condition that they became government agents and assisted in tracking down and bringing to justice the remaining Diablo gang members. They were not offered a position in the new Wildcards team, although they maintained a close friendship with Ace. As the adventures of the second incarnation of the Wildcards team have not all been de-classified by the government, it is possible that they worked together on one or more occasions.
Recently Lynn and V.R tracked a Diablo to San Marino, and a yacht belonging to the arms dealer Isabella Amari. During the mission Lynn encountered the British adventurer Spitfire, saving her from the former Diablo Syphon, who was working for Amari. While Lynn was on the yacht, V.R was attacked and abducted by agents of the demonic Horde. Along with other psychic mutants, V.R. was attached to a device called the Chaos Engine, which drained its victims energies to open the gateways between dimensions and enabled the Horde’s demon army to break through and attack the Earth. Realising that the device was killing them, the Hellion Lamprey attempted to cut V.R out of the machine, but the shock was too much for him and he died. His last thoughts were of Lynn, who is, as yet unaware of his death.
